Is the Honda Clarity plug-in hybrid a good car?
Honda’s next-generation Clarity is now available in three versions: fully electric, hydrogen fuel cell, and plug in hybrid electric. The plug-in hybrid version is the only option available to Canadians. This is what I was able to test recently. The Clarity’s strange appearance is the first thing that stands out. This Clarity might be a show-stopping vehicle if you are looking for a show stopper. However, it’s not what you might think. It’ wasn’t a good-looking vehicle according to most feedback I received from readers, friends, and onlookers. Source URL
This Plug-In model still brings Honda’s Clarity to the masses. Its combination of great interior space, usable electric range, premium amenities, and great performance make it a compelling package for those who are already plugged into the PHEV scene. Source URL
The Clarity plug-in hybrid has more all-electric range than any other plug in hybrid on the market. All versions of the HondaClarity are comfortable and spacious. The range problems are not the only problem with the Clarityplug in Hybrid. Source URL
The Volt is the Clarity Plug-In Hybrid’s only direct competitor. The Ford Fusion Energi, Toyota Prius Prime and Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid are all compact and mid-sized plug-in hybrids. However, none of them offer as long an electric range as the Volt and Clarity in terms of all-electric range. None of them have more than 30 miles of electric range, while Honda and Chevy offer 50+. Source URL
Its spacious interior will appeal to both drivers and passengers. It has seating for up to five people and is made from eco-conscious materials. You can charge the Clarity Plug-In Hybrid at home using a standard 120-volt outlet, or with a 240-volt one. There are also thousands of public charging stations across the country. Owners may also be eligible for state tax benefits such as charger rebates and HOV lane eligibility4. Source URL
Honda did a great job with the car’s handling and ride. The Accord is lighter than the Clarity and has a slight dynamic advantage. Although the Honda plug-in hybrid’s tires are harder, they can limit the car’s overall agility. However, this is not a deal breaker for many shoppers. Source URL
The Clarity wins in terms of spaceiness and electric range. But how fast can the Clarity PHEV accelerate? It all depends on the driving mode, all-electric or hybrid. These numbers are from a recent test.
- EV mode: 0-60 mph in 12.8 seconds
- Hybrid mode: 0-60 mph in 9.5 seconds
The Honda Clarity isn’t just one car. It’s three. The Honda Carity is a family of vehicles that share a shared battery-centric architecture. It includes a hydrogen fuel cell, full-electric, and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The plug in model is the only one worth my time. The fuel cell car is only available from 12 dealers in California. The majority of people don’t use hydrogen fuel as a fuel source. The EV is not available to lease in California or Oregon. It also has an electric range of only 89 miles, which is laughable. However, the plug in offers an alternative powertrain solution that is usable for most people Source URL
The cabin is insulated from wind and road noise. The interior is quiet when combined with silent electric operation, which is most of the time. This gives the Clarity a premium-car feel. The engine doesn’t fire up to boost the batteries. It is almost invisible even when it is on. Only when you need full power is when it turns on and revs loudly until you lift your foot off the ground. Source URL
What are the different driving modes on a Honda Clarity?
Five modes are available for the Clarity: Econ, Sport, Hybrid and Econ. Econ mode is great for maintaining battery power in traffic stop-and-go traffic. It reduces output and softens throttle response. For more aggressive acceleration, you will want to use Normal mode. Sport mode will get the engine running faster and give you a more powerful pick-up. It’s easy to select drive modes, as you don’t need to go through any menus. Source URL
The Clarity’s standard operation is to run on full-electric power as often as possible. However, if you push the throttle too hard, the gas engine will turn on to assist. To ensure the most efficient drive programming, an “Econ” mode reduces the engine’s tendency to supplant power and even reduces the car’s interior heating and cooling systems’ effort. The “HV” mode runs the car in hybrid mode all the time. This means that the engine is always on, and the battery reserve remains untouched. Sport mode turns everything on to full blast and delivers maximum output from the engine and battery as desired. You don’t have a dedicated EV setting for Econ or normal modes. Source URL
What is the range of the Honda Clarity PHEV?
Anything less than 100 miles can seem like a step back in the era of the 238-mile Chevy Bolt, and the Tesla Model 3 roughly the same 238 mile range. However, Honda doesn’t see the Clarity BEV’s range that way. Source URL
What is the difference between Honda Insight, Accord, and Honda Clarity?
Hybrid design is often characterized by a sense of self-righteousness. It’s as if every hybrid must prove it’s environmentally-friendly. This trend is not reflected in the Honda Clarity, which features a design call-back to the original Honda Insight and a few design cues from Acura. Source URL
According to early social media comments, styling isn’t winning over the general public. The Clarity’s silhouette was largely determined by aerodynamics. To reduce drag, air curtains are placed just ahead of the wheels. These allow air to pass over the wheel wells. The skirted rear fenders, which are reminiscent of the Insight’s first Insight, are designed to prevent air from entering the rear wheel wells from the rear. To maximize the battery’s electric range, it is crucial to reduce drag. Source URL
The Clarity’s interior dimensions are midsize and have a spacious and comfortable cockpit. The Accord has a cargo capacity of 439 litres, while the Clarity has 34 litres less trunk space. An eight-inch central screen behind the steering wheel provides information about energy, speed, and other trip information. Source URL
Is Honda coming out with a new Clarity electric?
Although the electric vehicle segment of the market just got smaller, we don’t think many buyers will notice. For 2020, the Honda Clarity Electric will be discontinued, but its plug-in hybrid siblings and hydrogen fuel cell siblings will continue to be available. Source URL
What is the difference between Honda Clarity and Clarity electric?
Clarity Electric: The Clarity’s purely electric powertrain is the most simple. The single electric motor is powered by a lithium-ion battery pack. It produces 161 horsepower and 221 pounds-feet of torque. The three vehicles weigh in at 4,024 pounds. The all-electric Clarity is lighter than its siblings, but it doesn’t have the same pep as smaller EVs with larger motors. Source URL
How do I know if my Honda Clarity is a PHEV?
The Honda Clarity PHEV transmission chooses the most efficient mode. This means that you don’t need to worry about it. Sometimes, the car will drive like a CVT (fixed revs, but changing speeds), while others you will notice it driving like a regular car. The energy display can be used to identify the mode of the car by either the center console or instrument cluster. Direct drive mode is when a gear is visible between the wheels. Source URL
What is the difference between Honda Accord Hybrid and Clarity?
Honda was North America’s first company to offer a hybrid, but it only had one remaining electrified vehicle in its line-up in 2017, the Accord Hybrid. After having discontinued the Civic and CR-Z hybrids, Honda’s Accord Hybrid was the only remaining electrifying vehicle. There are now two, and the Clarity plug-in hybrid combines a 1.5-litre, 103-horsepower Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine with an electric motor that produces 181 horsepower. The combined output is 212 horsepower and 232 lb.-ft. of torque. This is right on par with the Accord hybrid. Source URL
What was the first year of the Honda Clarity?
The Honda Clarity is a name you may have heard of in the past. The FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel cell vehicle was actually a test vehicle that was sold by the manufacturer from 2008 to 2014. It was a result of the experimental nature of hydrogen-powered vehicles and the absence of extensive refuelling infrastructure, it was inevitable that the FCX would not be a mass-market vehicle due to its lack of popularity. How many Honda Clarity Fuel Cell are there in California?
There are only 12 dealers in California that will lease the Clarity Fuel Cell. There is no purchase option. Source URL
Is there a lease credit for a Honda Clarity PHEV?
The Clarity PHEV is a respectable PHEV, and many of us would love to lease it. However, we won’t lease it if we don’t know there is a $6,500 ZEV credit in some ZEV-credit driving states, but not in others. Source URL
What is the difference between Honda Clarity EV and PHEV?
The Clarity Fuel Cell is for EV enthusiasts who are willing to compromise on finding a refueling station but want to be seen as a technological leader. However, the PHEV Clarity offers the chance for average drivers to drive electric for 40 miles on a single charge and not have to change their driving habits or refueling habits. Source URL
How many miles per gallon does a Honda Clarity get?
The car’s efficiency can still be difficult to measure when you try to calculate it. It’s difficult to do the math unless you have done some research on how to convert traditional miles-per-gallon numbers into kilograms of hydrogen per mile. The EPA has done the math for you and confirmed that the Clarity scores MPGe numbers 69/67/68 in combined city/highway/combined tests. The 366-mile range is the number you care most about if you only compare it to electric cars. Source URL
Clarity Plug-In Hybrid – 110 combined miles per gallon gasoline-equivalent (MPGe), electric rating; 44 city/40 highway/42 combined MPG gasoline-only rating. 47-mile maximum EV mode driving range rating. 340-mile combined gas-electric driving range. Based on 2021 EPA ratings. This information is for comparison purposes only. Driving conditions, how you drive, and how you maintain your vehicle will affect your MPGe/MPG. Source URL
That’s what most people want from their electrically-assisted cars: to get in and go. Despite making a lot of sense to many people, plug-ins are still not mainstream players. Honda will address some concerns about PHEV life in its marketing campaigns, but it won’t be for everyone. The Clarity Plug-In proposition will be more difficult next year, as there is a new Accord Hybrid in Honda showrooms. What is easier for those who aren’t familiar with electrification? A 42-mpg hybrid with 47 miles of EV range if the battery is fully charged or a sedan that gets 48-50 mpg with no plug? I will always choose the Accord. Source URL
ChargePoint allows you to charge clarity vehicles: *MPGe, or miles per gallon gasoline equivalent, is the average distance travelled per unit of energy consumed. This is instead of miles per hour for hybrid and electric vehicles.
|Model||Honda Clarity Electric||Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid|
|Electric Range||89 miles||47 miles (340 combined gas and electric)|
|Charging Time (Level 2 Charging)||3.5 hours||2.5 hours|

|Great for…||Commuting or around town driving, especially if you have a place to charge at home.||Driving electric most of the time, even if you don’t have charging at home and need to do a lot of long drives.|
How much does it cost to charge a Honda Clarity?
The cost of charging at home will vary depending on how much you drive and how much electricity you have in your area. Our EV savings calculator gives you an idea of the cost to charge the Clarity Electric or Plug-in Hybrid. Source URL
Since the car’s launch, we have already had over 500 Clarity Electric charging sessions on ChargePoint. ChargePoint has provided over 500 charging sessions for Clarity electric drivers so far, with an average cost of $0.88. More than 80% of sessions have been free*. Source URL
Is it better to lease or buy a Honda Clarity PHEV?
Yes, if I had such a tax burden, I could purchase one and get the full credit. However, like most Americans, it is better to lease it and have the cash from the lease, which in this instance is about $300 per month, take up the monthly payments. Based on the numbers that I received from Calling Fox Honda Upstate New York (one of the 10 states Honda financial allows cash incentives of $6,500 cash, with an additional $1,700 from the state), this is what I believe. Source URL
How much horsepower does a 2020 Honda Clarity have?
The 1.5-liter inline-four engine drives two electric motors. It produces 212 horsepower and 232 pound-feet torque. Honda estimates that the Clarity will reach 60 mph in nine seconds on a full charge. Although it’s not fast, it is still quite efficient for this car’s 4,052-pound curb weight. Source URL
How much does it cost to lease a Honda Clarity?
Clarity Fuel Cell: Only a few dealers in California offer the hydrogen-powered Clarity. The 36-month lease costs $369 per month and includes $2,868 due at signing. The federal incentive is a factor in the lease price. California residents may be eligible for a $5,000 rebate. All the features of the Plug-In Hybrid Touring are included in the Clarity Electric. Honda offers a three-year Clarity lease that includes fuel cards worth $15,000, considering the high price of hydrogen. This is a great deal. Source URL
If you decide to purchase a Clarity Fuel Cell, you can ignore the $58,490 MSRP. Honda offers the hydrogen car only as a lease vehicle at 12 California dealers. The Clarity’s lease includes up to $15,000 worth of hydrogen. It sounds great that you get “free fuel”, but $15/kg in real life is not uncommon and there are only around two dozen hydrogen stations currently open in California. Source URL
The Honda Clarity Electric is available for leasing at $199 per month for 36 months, with $1,799 due at signing. It is limited to California and Oregon and has an operating range just 89 miles. Source URL
Honda uses the “Clarity” name to refer to its stable of super-clean vehicles, which include a pure BEV, plug-in hybrids, and a hydrogen fuel cell car. The 2017 model year saw the debut of the Clarity Electric. The Clarity electric is a midsize sedan that produces 160 horsepower and 221 lb-ft. There are some downsides: The Clarity Electric’s EPA range is only 89 miles, it is only available in California and Oregon, and we cannot give you a base price as it can only be leased for $199 per month on a three-year lease with $1,799 down. Source URL
What is the range of the Honda Clarity electric car?
Honda had a remarkable amount of foresight when it made the Clarity available with a choice of electric, plug-in hybrid, or hydrogen power. Although this was a smart move, the company was unable to cover all the bases of the green car market. The Electric’s 25.5-kilowatt hour lithium-ion battery pack provided up to 89 miles of range. It was not only ahead of the now-discontinued Smart ForTwo Electric Drive but also behind most other electric cars on the market. This is due to the fact that it was not cheap. This figure was also based on a large number of miles. Drivers with less than 90 miles of reach must live in California or Oregon. They could also lease it. Source URL
The Honda Clarity Electric’s all-electric range is 89 miles (143 km) EPA on the 25.5 kWh battery. Source URL
What is the difference between Honda Clarity and Touring?
There are two trim levels available: the base Clarity and the Touring, which is more expensive and more exclusive. The Touring starts at $39,900 and the Clarity at $43,900. Apple CarPlay and Android auto are standard, as well as adaptive cruise, blind-spot alert, and lane-keep assist. You get most of the most useful features as standard, with the Toured adding cosmetic touches such as leather and satellite navigation as well radio and leather. Source URL
How much should I pay for a 2020 Honda Clarity?
Clarity Plug-in Hybrid: The base-level Honda Clarity Plug in Hybrid starts at $33,400. This includes a $7,500 federal credit. Standard features include heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and keyless entry. All models include a rearview camera, automatic emergency brake, adaptive cruise control, adaptive steering, and heated front seat. The price of rear climate control costs $514. The Clarity Touring trim starts at just $36,600. It includes creature comforts such as leather upholstery, navigation, and leather uphrest. The Plug-In Hybrid is available in all 50 states. California residents may also be eligible for an additional $1,500 rebate. Source URL
Can you drive a Honda Clarity PHEV with one pedal?
InsideEVs says: Peter’s “One pedal driving” instructions are for turning on the strongest setting of the regenerative brake system. The driver can use a paddle behind the steering wheel to pull on a paddle marked with a minus sign to accelerate the Clarity PHEV without using the brakes. The vehicle slows, but it also converts the car’s forward momentum into energy that returns to the battery pack. Source URL
What is the range of the Honda Clarity plug-in hybrid?
EV Range: 48 miles; MPG-e 110; MPG: 42; Base Price: $34,290. For a complete alt-fuel lineup, the Honda Clarity plug-in version is available in both full electric and fuel cell-powered versions. Honda’s 2018 lineup does not include a standard hybrid, except for the Accord Hybrid, which has been resigned for 2018 but has not yet been priced (the 2-17 model starts at $30,500). The Clarity PHEV is eligible for a $7,500 federal credit. Source URL
InsideEVs says: Fueleconomy.gov lists the Clarity Plug-In Hybrid as having a total range of 340 miles and an electric-only range 48 miles. It can easily exceed its official range of electric only, as we have already mentioned. 340 miles is not too short for a new car’s total range, regardless of whether it is a gas-powered or electrification vehicle. What is the difference between a Honda Clarity and a Chevy Volt?
The Clarity is always compared to the Chevy Volt. Chevy calls the Volt an extended-range, range-extended electric car, while Honda called this version of their Clarity a Plug in Hybrid. Source URL
The Volt is a range-extended EV that runs on battery power until the battery runs out. Then, it starts its range extender engine. The Clarity PHEV uses both its engine and EV capabilities to maximize efficiency. The Volt’s efficiency is matched or exceeded by the ClarityPHEV, which is larger and heavier than the Volt. Source URL
The Clarity’s gasoline engine, just like its direct competitor, the Chevy Volt, isn’t connected to its drive wheels. It is only there to turn a generator that recharges the batteries. The Clity’s internal combustion engine can send torque directly to the drive wheels through planetary gearsets in certain cases. However, the Clarity cannot change its gear ratio on the fly. Source URL
The gasoline engine is a plug-in. It is primarily used as a generator. The 17-kWh lithium-ion battery that powers it charges the gasoline engine, which in turn powers the electric motor that drives the wheels. This is very similar to a Chevrolet Volt. It differs from the Volt in that the Clarity’s gasoline engine can be coupled to the wheels via an electronically controlled clutch during highway cruising, which Honda claims is more efficient than electric drive in these conditions. How do I charge my Honda Clarity at work?
Tap your phone to start charging at a ChargePoint station. Or use the ChargePoint card that is included in the glovebox of the Honda Clarity Electric or Plug-in Hybrid. Source URL
Why is the Honda Clarity PHEV no longer available?
According to reports, Honda pulled the Clarity PHEV from widespread availability by restricting distribution to ZEV states. It also pulled back the Clarity Plug-In Hybrid by making it a California-only product. Source URL
How loud is the Honda Clarity in HV mode?
I have seen many reviews and comments on this forum about how noisy the engine sounds in HV mode. Consumers Reports’ review of the Clarity Touring says: “it’s a loud gas engine…” and “…the four cylinder engine wakes up with a ruckus that is strikingly loud.” My Clarity touring has over 4,000 miles and the engine is so quiet that it is almost impossible to tell when it is on. Is the Honda Clarity PHEV better than the Prius prime?
The Toyota Prius Prime is unable to match the Clarity PHEV in terms of interior space or electric range. Source URL
The Prius Prime is far ahead of the Clarity PHEV in 2019’s YTD sales. The Prime has sold 7,461 units so far this year, compared to just 5,513 for the Honda Clarity PHEV. Neither figure is even close to the Model 3 chart-topping at 46,425 in 2019. Source URL
Is a Tesla Model 3 better than a Honda Clarity?
Do I want a Model 3 Long Range (standard range doesn’t charge fast enough for long distance travel) Yes, but could I convince my wife to purchase one of these instead of the Clarity PHEV? It’s not likely, too expensive and I wasn’t yet confident in long distance driving. Source URL
Can you buy a 2019 Honda Clarity in Oregon?
This is not a source. My Clarity VIN numbers have been tracking them online for a while. No 2019’s are available outside the ZEV states (CA/OR, east coast states). They are very rare, with the exception of rare exceptions. Only 2018’s have been available outside ZEV States. However, most of them have been sold out due to heavy discounting. Oregon appears to have stopped receiving shipments a few months ago, even though it is a ZEV state. This is strange as Oregon is one of only two states (the other being California) where Honda currently offers a $5,000 dealer incentive for Clarity. Source URL
Is the Honda Clarity electric car coming to the US?
The cute-looking Honda E will not be available in the United States. The Clarity Electric’s demise leaves Honda without an electric car in its American range. However, it won’t be EV-free for long. Source URL
What is the difference between a Volt and a Clarity?
InsideEVs says: Insightman makes a small but important distinction between the Volt and Clarity Plug-In Hybrid. The Volt can operate in pure electric mode when you want it, while the Clarity does not. It will operate mostly in electric mode if its battery pack is full. However, its computer brain reserves the right to turn the engine on if it believes it would be more efficient in a given situation. This happens when the accelerator is pressed down hard enough. The Clarity requires both power sources to get its full grunt. It can only operate as an EV when the battery pack has been charged. Source URL
