What is overlanding and how does it work?
Overlanding is a vehicle-based adventure travel that combines self-reliance, resilience, and enjoyment. Modern overlanding has captivated adventurers since its inception with four-wheel drive vehicles. Source URL
Overlanding is self-reliant adventure travel to remote destinations where the main goal of the trip is to find adventure. Overlanded is a journey that has a purpose. It can be accommodated by any number of off-highway vehicles (from trucks to bicycles), where camping is the main form of lodging. This camping is often for extended periods of time (months to years) and often crosses international borders. Expedition is defined as a journey with a purpose, but overlanding sees the journey as the goal. Source URL
Overlanding is a love of camping, camping culture, and exploring new places. Overlanders also have a deep passion for vehicle mechanics, customization, and building a unique vehicle that suits the needs and personality of each overlander. Source URL
What makes the best overlanding vehicle?
Any vehicle that claims it can go off-road will have flat tires, a lifted suspension, and bountiful low-end torque. Overlanders, however, are a bit more advanced. They must have more than just a few chunky tires and a bit of grunt. They need to be able to survive in the wilderness and be self-reliant. This is what makes them a roaming base of operations. Although it’s not a battle against nature, it’s more of a friendly spar. You still need the right tools to do your job. These are the best vehicles to have in your overlanding fleet. Source URL
When it comes to overlanding vehicles, bigger is better. While not many off-road campers would or can afford something as large as an EarthRoamer, if you are going to build a vehicle that can be used as a rock-crawler or residence in one, you want as many capabilities and convenience as possible. Best Overlanding Vehicles
EarthCruiser Terranova Expedition
EarthCruiser makes some of the most powerful and capable overlanding vehicles that we have ever seen. They are based on single- and dual-cab commercial trucks. The EC Terranova Expedition camper, their newest model, is a more familiar vehicle for many of us: mounting it to a 4×4 heavy-duty pickup truck chassis. Source URL
SLRV Expedition Vehicles
SLRV Expedition Vehicles, an Australian company, may have just redefined how extreme an overlander can be. The 8×8 is a luxury overlanding vehicle that can sleep up to 10 people. It is the ideal vehicle to travel the Outback with your family of eight, or to go to Starbucks for a flat white. Source URL
Best Overlanding Companies and Events
Main Line Overland
You can expect to see amazing vehicles if you spend several days on a large, rural Pennsylvania property with hundreds of people who are devoted to the overlanding lifestyle. This is what I expected. I was expecting to see trucks and SUVs all custom-built and ready for adventure of all kinds. What I didn’t expect was the quality and variety of the builds. This shouldn’t have surprised me, as the event is hosted by Main Line Overland. It also features outfitters such as ARB and U-Joint Offroad. These are just a few of the vehicles that I saw that weekend. Source URL
Titus Adventure Company
Titus Adventure Company, a Denver-based company, is trying to solve this problem by becoming the Uber of Overlanding. Titus offers an overlander that is fully equipped for when you need to go away, but allows you to return to your off-roader-free life when you return. Source URL
Best Light Overlanding Vehicles
Compact crossovers are built on the same hatchback platform. They offer more interior space, features, and affordability as the smaller models, but have smaller dimensions, practicality, and are more affordable than the subcompact models. If equipped correctly, compact crossovers can be practical and even somewhat capable Overlanding vehicles due to their larger dimensions.
Ford Escape, Kia Sportage, Subaru Forester and Toyota Rav4 models are all top-selling and are very capable everyday vehicles that will make your life easier. If you are looking for pure off-road use outside of basic overlanding, however, you will need to look elsewhere. Source URL
Best Electric Overlanding Vehicles
A natural fit for electric camping and overlanding, recreational vehicles should be a large market in the future. It is easy to convert passenger cars to electric vehicles for large trucks and SUVs that people drive off-road.
Commercial fleet vans such as the electric Ford Transit and Mercedes-eSprinter will be a major market for electric vehicles in future years. These vehicles can be converted into campervans. Although range may be an issue, one would not say that fuel consumption is an inevitable part of communing with nature. Source URL

It would make sense to go the adventure route with the Telluride. One of the most popular trends in the automotive industry is off-road-slash-overlanding. Kia was already targeting this market when it named the TellURide after a Colorado ski town. To show their capabilities, vehicles at the launch had roof racks, bull bars, and snorkels. It was only later that it was revealed that Kia had a great-driving SUV at a low price for mass-market buyers. Source URL
Land Rover made a smart decision by resurrecting the Defender for modern times.
Range Rover Classic
The Classic was Range Rover’s first official vehicle. It was available from 1970 to 1996. The Classic is powered by a variety of V8s and turbo-diesel inline-four engines with manual and automatic transmission options. It began its lifecycle as a two-door with rear liftgate, but the four-door model was introduced in 1981. The first Range Rover was a rare vehicle in North America. Although it was hampered by regulations and financial problems, the majority of Range Rovers that arrived on these shores were grey market vehicles. A new Range Rover with fuel injection was introduced to the US in 1987. It became a huge hit with both overlanding enthusiasts and luxury enthusiasts alike. East Coast Defender’s builds improve the truck’s cult status. Source URL

Toyota FJ Series
The Toyota FJ Series was Japan’s response to America’s Jeep and Britain’s Defender. The FJ’s iconic character, fortitude, and silhouette only solidify its place in overlanding history. Although it was initially reverse-engineered from the Jeep’s Jeep, the FJ is still a classic example of a classic vehicle. The roof and doors could be removed in most countries, while the windshield could be folded down to allow for maximum nature-intake in the places it was allowed. The cult following of the FFJ is well-deserved, just like many other vehicles on this list. Source URL

The DuoCar S Sprinter-based van was a great example of this. It featured a comfortable space for campers and amenities that are normally reserved for larger vehicles. Source URL

It’s fascinating to see it all through Jenkins’ eyes. It is always nice to have a different perspective and varied content. Source URL

What is the difference between off roading and overlanding?
Overlanding has a long and rich history. It shares its roots with the expansion and growth of human civilization. While humans have been “overlanding” since the beginning of their existence, the term today conjures up very different images than it did in the past. What is overlanding? What about all the 4WDs (Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, Jeep Gladiators and Toyota Tundra) cruising off-roads? Is that overland? What is an overlandering? Is there a difference between off-roading and overlandings? You’re not the only one confused. We’ve explored overland” Source URL
What is the history of overlanding in the US?
Overlanding is as old as the automobile. Before the interstate highway system, motorists who wanted to travel to and from various destinations across the country had no choice but to use unpaved, untraveled roads. Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Harvey Firestone, and Thomas Edison are some of the most well-known forefathers of this pastime. They took Model T’s into the wilderness to go camping as early as 1914. Today, overlanding can be described by rugged body-on frame beasts that stomp through bogs, side-stepping toppled tree trunks, and carrying passengers through otherwise unpassable terrain. Source URL
What is the point of overlanding in the US?
Overlanding is not about conquering obstacles. Although the roads and trails we travel can be difficult or rough, they are the means to an end and not the goal. Overlanders want to explore and learn about the world, whether it’s a 100-mile trip 100 miles from home or a 10,000-mile expedition across another continent. Although vehicles and equipment may be simple or extravagant, they can also be used as a means to a goal. These are the rewards of overlanding: history, wildlife, culture, scenery, self-suffering, and self-sustaining. Source URL
